1. Check the developer

Look at the developer name, their other apps, update history, and official website if one is available. Watch for lookalike names or copied branding.

2. Read the permissions

Ask whether each requested permission makes sense for the app's purpose. A photo editor may reasonably need access to selected photos; a simple calculator usually has no obvious reason to access your contacts or microphone. Review permissions again after installation if the app's behaviour changes.

3. Read reviews carefully

  • Look for repeated, specific complaints about ads, crashes, billing, or privacy.
  • Don't rely only on the average star rating.
  • Be cautious of large clusters of generic reviews that say very little.

4. Review privacy and payment terms

Check the privacy information, subscription price, trial conditions, and how to cancel before starting a trial. Avoid entering payment details into unexpected pop-ups or pages.

5. Prefer trusted sources

Use official app stores or the developer's verified distribution channel. Be especially careful with APK files shared through random websites, messages, or file-sharing links.

6. Keep your phone updated

Install security updates, use a screen lock, and remove apps you no longer need. If an app behaves suspiciously, revoke relevant permissions and uninstall it.

No checklist can guarantee an app is safe. Use several signals together and avoid installing an app when its purpose, source, or permission requests are unclear.
